Tough decisions in the health sector: how to fairly and efficiently allocate scarce resources

All health systems struggle with deciding how best to allocate scarce resources – e.g. funding, access to drugs, treatments, ICU beds, etc. In this webinar, Professor Paul Hansen will present how to use multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) to mitigate these issues in the health sector, including how to:

- Prioritize patients in a consistent, transparent and equitable manner that accurately reflects clinical judgment – as done by the New Zealand Ministry of Health which prioritizes about 100,000 patients a year.

- Evaluate health ‘technologies’(e.g. drugs, procedures, equipment) and allocate a budget.)

- Prioritize diseases for research into new drugs – as performed by the World Health Organization.

- Tackle Covid-19 related prioritization issues, such as admission to ICUs and distribution of vaccines.
